"It's good we could have this talk. Now, what do you say, Emnor?"
„It’s good we could have this talk. Now, what do you say, Emnor?“
Emnor gave a barking laugh. "Honestly, Geol, look at us! What a fine pair of demon-hunters would we make, one of us limping and the other using his odd arm to do what? Wave a white flag ? You might be a damn good fighter but you can't trust your knee 100% . Neither can I trust in my arm, nor will I be able to anytime soon. We can't! It's folly to go against them openly!"

"I don't intend to go against them openly. We won't find any suitable help if we don't have more information about them. Once we got that we can try and find more men. Right now, we'll need stealth and who better to help me there than you?"

"Almost about everyone else?" Emnor suggested, looking up unhappily. "What makes you think I got what you need?"

Geol snorted and stood up. "Don't you try it that way," he growled. "Do you take me for an idiot? I'm not blind nor deaf and there's even something between my ears with which to put two and two together. You said you were new to that band of robbers. Fine, but you clearly weren't new to the trade, so.... where were you before?"

Emnor made a face and gave no answer. Geol hadn't really expected one and went on. "Hm. Let's look at what happened next. Looking for a safe place to stay, you came here. North, when you knew that was where those men had come from. Shouldn't you have tried any other direction? No, you went straight to good old Himrien , who is ever so helpful." His words dripped acid. "And she took you poor things in, even though you were injured and had a family tagging along.... oh, come on! I know that woman, she'd never ever do that if she didn't see some profit in it. The mere fact of you being here tells me you knew each other before. Now, why would she know someone like you, wealthy trader that she is. Wait, now that I mention it, most little villages up here aren't as well of as this one, aren't they? But there are no excellent farmlands here nor any deep mines... so, where do her ample supplies come from? Himrien is dealing with what you and others like you bring her, I'd bet my sword on it. And if she kept you even though you stopped stealing than you must be damn good at other things. If she's so sure of your worth, than why shouldn't I be?"

Emnor looked at him with a considerable amount of shock showing on his face. Geol almost had to laugh. "Now you fear you betrayed her. Don't you worry. Her secret is safe with me. It would be different at another place in another time, but here I have to admit that she keeps this place well under control. You know, if one has spent his life among fighters, one gets the knack of recognizing the ability in other men. I went about this village with open eyes and noted who would need my help in case of an attack and who would be able to fend for himself. There was quite a number of 'fend -for-themselves', more than in most villages. They'll get along without us and their petty crimes don't concern me near as much as those.... others. I'll need your stealth , Emnor, since I lost my own."

Emnor shook his head in horror and stood up to face him. "No, Geol! No! You can't mean it! I've seen those things, we're no match for them! I can't, I got a family to care for!"

Geol turned his gaze full upon him, a grave expression in his eyes. "Yes, you've seen them. You know what we're up against. Don't you think they frighten me, too? But they didn't take that man for nothing, Emnor. They are up to something and we got to find out what it is, where they'll strike next! You don't wish for the children to grow up in a country controlled by demons, do you? You have to take care of them you say. Yes, you do. And best do it by stopping those things!"

Emnor looked at him with eyes gone round and wide with fear. He'd wanted to reply something, but the knowledge that Geol was right caused the words to be stuck in his throat. He swallowed hard and began to shiver as he nodded.

His knees gone shaky, he had to sit down again. "Allright then. Allright."
